We are happy to accept applicants with a wide variety of academic qualifications. The list below gives details of our normal entry requirements for a range of qualifications. Please note that the information given below is for guidance only - each application is considered individually.

Useful Subjects

We believe that the two most important subjects at higher level (e.g. A2 level, International Baccalaureate Higher Level) are Mathematics and Physics as these provide the foundations for a degree course in Engineering. For the third A2 or higher level subject there is a wide variety of subjects that will be helpful when studying Engineering at University. Some of the more common subjects offered by past applicants are Further Mathematics, Electronics, Design Technology, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, ICT, Computer Science, Geography (popular with Civil Engineering applicants), Business, Economics, English, Art, Music or Foreign languages. General studies is not accepted as a third subject. If 2 or more A2 subjects are offered with Mathematics and Physics we will consider the highest grade achieved to be part of the offer. For example, assume that a BEng applicants has a conditional offer of AAB at A2 including Mathematics and Physics. The offer holder then achieves the following four A2 results; A in Mathematics, B in Physics, A in Chemistry and C in Economics. The terms and conditions of their offer have been met as they have ABA grades, based on their Mathematics and Physics results combined with the highest of their other two subjects, A in Chemistry.

The extended project will provide excellent experience in research skills and is something that could be mentioned in the UCAS personal statement and discussed at any interview. However, the extended project will not be included in any conditional offer.

A-levels

MEng: AAA for 2017 entry, AAA* for 2018 entry

BEng/BSc: AAB for 2017 entry, AAA for 2018 entry

Candidates are expected to offer three GCSE Advanced Level (A2) subjects, excluding General Studies. A2-level subjects should normally include Mathematics and Physics. However, the School will consider very strong applicants who offer only A2 Mathematics or A2 Physics.

We are happy to consider a wide variety of third A2 subjects with Mathematics and Physics, see useful subjects, and accept A2 Further Mathematics as a full A2 subject. We are also happy to consider an alternative third qualification, such as applications from those offering A2 level Mathematics and Physics with a level 3 BTEC qualification (deemed by UCAS to be equivalent to an A2 level) in place of the 3rd A level. Those applicants offering only A2 Physics should have a proven mathematical ability and a strong profile at A2 level. A proven mathematics capability would be a strong result in their most recent Mathematics qualification. If an applicant has taken, or is taking, AS Mathematics this must be at grade B or above (or at grade A for 2018 entry). If an applicant is not taking AS Mathematics they must have A or A* at GCSE Mathematics. Such candidates, if admitted, replace their optional module with the module 'Foundation Mathematics' in their first year at Warwick**. Strong Mathematics capability is essential for all Engineers. This entry route is intended for highly motivated applicants who have realised a little late that they want a career in Engineering and hence did not choose to study Mathematics in their first year of A level studies or perhaps did not have access in their school/college to A2 level Mathematics.

**Please note: we are proposing to introduce a computation module to the first year and move current optional modules to the second year. Currently students who take the Foundation Maths module have an 'example 'class each week on background to the topic taught in the main maths lecture which takes place earlier in the week. We think it is a shame that these students miss out on the opportunity to take some of the other optional modules (which we are poposing to move to year two). In the proposed first year maths module, the 'example' class will still run each week and any student can come along to it to brush up before the lecture. Those who would normally have taken Foundation Maths will have the example classes in their timetable but will no longer be formally examined on Foundation Maths, instead doing a series of tests to check progress.

For an applicant offering only A2 Mathematics they should have a proven capability in Science and/or Physics as demonstrated by their most recent, relevant qualification, a B (or A for 2018 entry) at AS level Physics or an A or A* in GCSE Science or Physics, as well as a strong profile at A2 level. Some additional examples classes are provided in the first year to support students who have not studied Physics to A2 level.
