Flexible Working Snap Survey 2

The School launched a second flexible working survey in May 2017 to gather more data on the extent of flexible
working within the school, and assess any changes since the previous survey.

Compared to the previous survey there was an increased response rate of 40% (96 from 69), of which 57% were female (-6%)

Summary:

  • 88% of staff have worked flexibly in the last 12 months
  • 83% of staff have not formalised their flexible working arrangement
  • 80% alter their arrival and leaving times, 55% work from home and 48% work evenings and weekends
  • Key reasons for working flexibly were work/life balance 48%, demands of job 44%, childcare responsibilities 42% and to enable greater productivity 40%
  • The major constraint to working flexibly were seen as job requirements 41%, followed by car parking issues 37% and scheduled meetings/lecture times and team requirements, 27% and 25% respectively

Actions:

  • To continue to push central University for car parking solutions
  • To support those recognised as working flexibly by meeting times scheduled accordingly
  • To continue to assess and support flexible working within the School with a view to increasing opportunities

The School and University policy including formalising flexible working were communicated at the February all staff meeting as an Athena SWAN agenda item.
