Research Interests

My principal concern is the transmission dynamics of infectious disease. In order to develop understanding of observed patterns, I develop mathematical and statistical models.

The mathematical models are combinations of different processes, and allow us to assess their influence and interactions. Of course, these models are much simpler than real life, and they are tools or sketches, rather than attempts to reproduce reality.

In order for these models to be applicable, they must relate directly to data and to policy-making problems. Data are required both to estimate parameters, but also to validate the models.

Policy-making usually requires finding the most cost-effective intervention, which, frequently, can only be done in models as the practicalities make field trials impossible.

I currently sit on the ACDP TSE risk assessment group, and am a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors for the journal Science
