Research Interests

Plant senescence, including the functional analysis of regulatory genes that control  leaf senescence in Arabidopsis and  the molecular and biochemical analysis of post harvest senescence in green vegetables, particularly broccoli. Plant signalling networks using Systems Biology.

Plant Response to Environmental STress in Arabidopsis

Systems Biology of signalling networks in leaf senescence

Functional analysis of regulatory genes involved in Arabidopsis leaf senescence

Genetics and genomics of post harvest senescence in broccoli

Molecular analysis of petal senescence

Vegetable Genetic Improvement Network (VeGIN)

I did my PhD at the John Innes Institute, Norwich, UK on molecular genetics of Rhizobium leguminosarum, and then was a  post doc for 3 years at the Unit of Nitrogen Fixation, Sussex working on molecular genetics of N fixation in Klebsiella pneumoniae. I then spent 7 years in the US working for BioTechnica International in Cambridge MA where I switched my attention to Agrobacterium and development of  plant transformation systems. I then moved back to the UK and became a lecturer at Wye College, University of London where I started my research programme on plant senescence, initially in leaves of Brassica napus. In 1997 I moved to Horticulture Research International, which is now the School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick. In 2006 I was appointed a Reader in Plant Science at the University of Warwick and an associate of the Warwick Systems Biology Centre. In June 2007 I was appointed Director of the Systems Biology Doctoral Training Centre.

Currently Chair of the Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) Plant Section and sits on SEB Council.
Represents SEB on the Executive of the UK Plant Sciences Federation (UKPSF).
Eelected, in an international election, to the Executive Board of the Global Plant Council (GPC).
