Sheep mastitis

In chronic mastitis the udder tissue feels lumpy. These lumps are abscesses, formed by bacteria, and may not be present or identical every time you feel an udder. The greater the proportion of ewes in a flock with udder lumps the greater the amount of mastitis in a flock.

Regular inspection and recording increases the detection of ewes with chronic mastitis.

Recommendations
  • Cull ewes with udder lumps at weaning.
  • If it is not possible to cull these ewes separate from ewes without lumps and manage them as a separate flock to reduce the spread of infection.
