Work History

Oct 2011 – Present PhD, School of Life Sciences, Warwick University

Four year BBSRC Case award PhD on ‘Delay of Bolting in Rocket’ including 6 month spent working with industrial sponsor Elsoms Seeds Ltd, Spalding.

May 2009 –Aug 2011 Research Technician, School of Life Sciences, Warwick University

Technical assistance role on the project ‘Manipulation of Bolting Time for Improved Quality in Lettuce production’. Tasks include PCR, sequencing, plant maintenance, record keeping, plant transformation, RNA extraction, Real Time PCR, teaching techniques to colleagues and training of undergraduate project students.

Oct 2008 –April 2009 Research Assistant for Rijk Zwaan at Warwick HRI

Laboratory assistant providing technical support to the project, ‘Manipulation of Bolting Time for Improved Quality in Lettuce production’. Tasks include Molecular Cloning, PCR, Preparation of BAC DNA, Gateway Cloning, colony screening using radiolabelled probes, Gel electrophoresis, seed cleaning and sowing, writing protocols, DNA Nebulisation, Genome Walking and DNA extraction.

Modules taken included Flowers and Biotechnology, Plants and the Light Environment, Genomics, Practical Methods in Experimental Biology and Plant Developmental Genetics. Third year project ‘Examining the gene expression of vitamin E genes in Brassica napus’. It involved primer design and techniques such as RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and RT – PCR.

Leading and teaching a local youth club for 12 – 17 year olds. Supervising a monthly youth-led church service.

Reading, swimming, ballet, horse riding, attending aerobics classes, spending time with my friends and being creative.
