I started my PhD in the School of Life Science under the supervision of Dr. Hendrik Schäfer in March 2012.

My project involves studying the ''Environmental genomics and functional diversity of plant-associated microbial dimethylsulfide degradation in costal salt marshes''.

As long as I can remember, I have always been desperate about finding the answers of how our beautiful blue planet works and functions.

Driven by my curiosity and the huge interest to understand more about the relevance of microorganisms in natural and industrial processes I wanted to do a practical term in an internationally recognized laboratory and so I started a research project at the Delft University of Technology under Mari K.H. Winkler, Gerard Muyzer, Robbert Kleerebezem and Mark van Loosdrecht. The project that I carried out was focusing on the aerobic granular sludge technology. This work further raised my awareness and appreciation of what the metabolic activity of microorganisms can achieve.

Returning from the practical term at Delft, I then spent eight months of practical research work at my home university in Germany to complete my bachelor thesis “Molecular biological analysis of microbial communities in sediment of the drinking water reservoir Saidenbach” at the Technical University Dresden. In this project, I gathered more knowledge about the diversity of complex microbial communities in the sediment of the drinking water reservoir Saidenbach. I applied molecular environmental microbiological techniques including analysis of microbial community composition, quantification key functional guilds by qPCR and studied seasonal variations in the microbial community composition using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis.

My experience of research at the TU Delft and TU Dresden has inspired my aspiration to do a PhD at the University of Warwick under the supervision of Dr. Hendrik Schäfer.
