I graduated from the University of Warwick in July 2009, having obtained a 1st class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry with Intercalated Year. Between the second and final years of my degree I worked for a year as a Research Technician in the Biological Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility within the Department of Biological Sciences at Warwick.
During this year I was involved in the preparation and analysis of samples using a wide variety of proteomic techniques including: liquid chromatography, Q-TOF ESI and MALDI mass spectrometry, 2DLC and 2D gels. I also ran various method development experiments to improve the methods currently used in the Facility.
My year in industry sparked my interest in the use of mass spectrometry in the life sciences. I was particularly interested in the development of new techniques/instrumentation and their potential applications in biological research. When I returned for the final year of my degree, I undertook my final year research project with the Scrivens group, with a project to evaluate the inclusion of pre-fractionation steps in mass spectrometry-based proteomics approaches.
During this period I decided that I wanted to continue in the field of mass spectrometry in the life sciences, and successfully applied for a 3-year Medical Research Council (CASE Award) PhD with Professor Jim Scrivens (Warwick) and Dr. Daniel Weston (AstraZeneca, Cheshire, UK) in the novel field of Imaging Mass Spectrometry. I started my PhD in September 2009 and my main research interests involve applying a number of imaging mass spectrometry approaches to the localisation of drug compounds in tissue. For more information please see My Research.
Outside of my academic life, I am a Sub-Warden in a halls of residence on campus at the University. This involves supporting students, helping to create a sense of community within halls and organising social events for the students living there, as well as leading the team of resident tutors for my area. Aside from this, I enjoy walking/hiking, swimming and I have recently taken up skiing. I really enjoy following Formula 1 and I play both acoustic guitar and piano. I am passionate about food and cooking, especially trying new cuisines and sharing food with friends.
