Fadi finished his MSc from the University of Exeter in Bioinformatics in 2010 and on July/2016 he finished his PhD from the University of Warwick in virology. The project of his PhD focused on understanding the biological determinants of recombination between RNA viruses using poliovirus as a model system. Fadi has developed a lab experiment included PCR assay and large-scale co-infection reaction to isolate recombinants raised between poliovirus type 1 and type 3 at the P2 region of the virus genome. Throughout his project, he was able to amplify and prepare a sufficient amount of recombinants to be sequenced by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). In order to detect the and analyse recombination junctions within the NGS reads, Fadi has developed and optimised a unique bioinformatics pipeline that used a combination of published algorithms and in-house codes. Finally, he was able to establish a novel visualisation tool to map the recombinants and monitor their corresponding features.
