The primary goal of this module is to provide students, who have no or limited prior experience of business, with a solid foundation in the essential aspects of accounting and financial management.
The aim is to offer an introduction to the key areas of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management with a focus on issues of particular relevance to managers in bio-technology and bio-process based businesses. The course will also emphasise the role and importance of accounting and financial management within the wider business (and in particular the process, bioprocess and biotechnology business) context
- Advances in Crop Protection
How can a wide range of control approaches be combined into an integrated crop management system? How can the conflicting requirements of environmental and crop protection be managed? In this module you will learn about the importance and impact of plant pests, diseases and weeds on food production, as well as their biology and ecology.
- Biochemical Engineering
Process engineers use a range of fundamental operations when performing chemical and biological reactions on a large scale and separating the raw products into finished materials suitable for the market place. During this module you will focus on biotechnological processes and processing options for handling and separating compounds of interest. You will develop process engineering skills which will enable you to select the appropriate methods to make a required end product.
- Biodiversity, Conservation & Ecosystem Services
Many natural resources for the provision of food, materials, energy and recreation have become overexploited or put under severe pressure in both wild and managed landscapes. Our capacity to respond is limited by an associated loss of biodiversity. Conservation of natural biodiversity and habitat resources is vitally important for the future. In this module you will explore what makes plants and animals vulnerable, and examine practical conservation management strategies for habitats and key species.
- Biological Invasions in Changing Environments
Non-native invasive species pose significant threats to natural and agricultural ecosystems worldwide and often have very severe, though difficult to quantify, economic impacts. During this module you will investigate the economic and environmental impacts of invasive species, and evaluate the threats posed to agricultural and natural ecosystems that are subject to increased environmental change and disturbance.
- Bioproduct Plant Design & Economic Analysis
Plant design effects a project’s usability; performance; cost effectiveness; and long-term operability, safety and environmental compatibilities. This module explains the integration of unit operations into functional and commercially viable bioprocesses.
Modern, industrialised economies place significant pressure on the environment. In some sectors of society, science and technology are viewed increasingly as a threat to sanctity of life, public health, privacy, democracy and personal freedom. Controversies arise which lead to public disputes and raise complex ethical questions. Discuss how science and technologies can best be regulated and used for common good in a globalised world.
- Business Strategy
Business strategy is about the setting of long-term objectives for a business and devising the means of achieving those objectives. During this module you will work in groups to examine and learn from case studies, as well as competing against other groups in an online business simulation. You will then use your skills to analyse a company operating in an industry relevant to your masters degree title.
- Cereal, Oilseed and Root Crop Agronomy
The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the agronomic principles of the main UK arable crops. You will examine principles of crop production; crop nutrition; identification of and protection against weeds, pests and diseases; precision agronomy and other innovations.

Global food security- providing access for the world’s population to affordable, safe and nutritious food- is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. In this module you will review current physical, political and biotic drivers which contribute to the global food security agenda.
- Climate Change
How will climate change impact ecosystems, agriculture and food security? Climate change is widely agreed to be the most important environmental driver of economic and societal change for the 21st century. In this module you will consider the science of climate change: origins and evidence, predictions and consequences, mitigation and adaptation.
- Crop Physiology and Production
How can scientific understanding maximise gains from or minimise input for crop production in both the field and glasshouse? This module provides an appreciation of the diversity of crop production practices and techniques in specific production situations. As part of this module students usually visit a site of commercial production to illustrate application, context and business practice.
- Drug Discovery & Biopharmaceutical Development
In this module you will explore the development and exploitation of bio-pharmaceutical products, acquiring an integrated understanding of the breadth and depth of medicinal drug design and production. - Plant Breeding & Trial Design for Registration
Crop production can be considered as two distinct components: is what is grown, i.e. the crop varieties, and how it is grown, including the use of chemicals to control pests and diseases and to modify plant growth behaviour. Modern technology is enabling rapid advances on both fronts and they have a central role to play in improving farming sustainability. In this module you will learn about the breeding industry and how genomics, combined with traditional and advanced breeding technologies, are used to generate new varieties. You will learn how to design and evaluate safety and efficacy tests trials for new agrochemicals and apply this knowledge using specific case studies.
Your project will be a major part of your masters degree, worth 60 of 180 credits. The project represents approximately three months enquiry and data collection, and one month of write-up. Students who are able to arrange a work placement for themselves may be able to do this as their project - this must be agreed in advance with the Project module leader.

Soil is vital for farming and food security. In this module you will focus on understanding of the importance of soil in supporting ecosystem services, how soils are managed in agricultural systems and the wider environmental consequences, and threats to soil security. Key topics are soil biology, biogeochemical cycling, nutrient use and management, soils and environmental pollution, soil degradation, soils and climate change and compost/ waste application to land.
