Programme Management

Our management groups are overseen by the Director of CLAHRC West Midlands, Professor Richard Lilford, and the Heads of Delivery, Mrs Nathalie Maillard and Mr Paul Bird.

Management structure


Theme Steering Committees (TSCs)

The TSCs are responsible for the overall co-ordination and monitoring of each research theme to ensure progress towards successful delivery of research objectives. Each TMG meets at least four times a year and reports to the Programme Steering Committee (PSC).

Programme Steering Committee (PSC)

The aim of this group is to oversee the delivery of the whole programme and to optimise integration and synergy between themes. As well as the financial monitoring of the programme, the PSC plays an important role in reviewing and appraising the research proposals that are developed within each theme. The PSC convenes each month and comprises theme leaders, lead researchers and financial and operational personnel. Terms of reference are available for download here.

Programme Executive Committee (PEC)

The PEC has a responsibility to report on the progress of the programme to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) through Birmingham Health Partners, as well as providing strategic advice on the overall management of the research programmes, financial monitoring and the conduct of external relations and dissemination of results. Scientific Advisory Group (SAG)

The SAG provides scientific advice on all aspects of the CLAHRC West Midlands programme of research, including four service themes and cross-cutting research activities. The group meets at least once a year, usually over a two-day period in Birmingham, UK. The group is chaired by Professor Jeremy Grimshaw, University of Ottawa, Canada, and members of the group cover a wide range of expertise from sociology to clinical epidemiology. Patient and Public Involvement Supervisory Committee

The PPI Supervisory Committee aims to provide patient and public views at all levels of the management structure and to act as a ‘critical friend’ to develop and coordinate involvement in research and implementation activities being undertaken by the CLAHRC West Midlands. This Committee comprises PPI Advisers who have been recruited as lay volunteers and PPI Liaisons embedded in the four service Themes. Terms of reference are available for download here.
