In Memoriam: Joshua Burke

We are very sad to have to tell you that 2019 MB ChB graduate, Joshua Burke died suddenly on Sunday 14 June.

A number of Josh’s friends from his time at WMS want to express how they feel at this difficult time. They said “We are stunned and devastated by his untimely passing. He touched the lives of so many of his peers during his time at Warwick, and will be very fondly remembered. He was a wonderfully talented and kind hearted soul, who had an unparalleled vivacity and passion for life.

Coming to Warwick from a highly successful music performance career, Josh brought with him many skills and interests. He was a renowned teacher at the medical school and dedicated a huge amount of his time to helping his peers learn and grow. Outside of WMS he continued to love music, science, sports and literature, and was a regular feature in the Warwick orchestra, the revue band and a local string quartet.

When he wasn’t teaching or studying, Josh was a devoted friend and family man; he loved nothing more than going on adventures, particularly to see his wonderful niece and nephew, who he adored tremendously. He was charming, erudite, hilarious, worldly, and an exceptionally warm-hearted person, and will forever stay in our hearts”.

Professor Sudhesh Kumar, Dean of Medicine said “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Joshua Burke. He was a bright student with many excellent qualities. He clearly made a positive impact on the staff and students of WMS during his time here. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”

Due to the current Covid-19 situation Josh’s funeral is now at capacity. However, Zoe, Josh’s sister has said that they plan to scatter his ashes in August, and if any of his friends would like to attend we can put you in touch with her. Please email wms.comms@warwick.ac.uk in the first instance.

This announcement is clearly very upsetting for all of those who knew Josh. Support is available for anyone who has been affected by this news through the MB ChB support team. There is a full list of all the support available on our Student Support Moodle page. University Wellbeing Support Services can also offer specific bereavement support and are able to prioritise our medical students at this time.
