Warwick Medical School named best overall medical school in surgical skills competition
Warwick Medical School students have achieved the highest overall score in the 2026 Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh National Surgical Skills Competition.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) National Surgical Skills Competition is a prestigious annual challenge designed to test and celebrate the practical abilities of medical students across the UK. Competitors demonstrate essential surgical techniques, from suturing and knot-tying to basic laparoscopic skills, in a supportive but competitive environment.
To enter the competition, students completed an online quiz, with the highest scoring students from each medical school moving on to the next round, where they were invited to upload a video demonstrating their skills.
As the highest scoring student from Warwick Medical School in this round, Sujaree (Mew) Kuenghakit was invited to attend the Grand Final in Edinburgh, along with the top scoring students from every other medical school in the UK.
Mew says: "In the final round, we were assessed on a range of surgical tasks such as suturing and laparoscopic skills. It was a fun and memorable experience. I especially enjoyed exploring the college and museum and had the opportunity to meet some incredibly inspiring surgeons. It was definitely worthwhile, both for developing skills and for the exposure. The highlights were the hands-on challenges and being part of such a motivating environment."
At the end of the event, awards were presented to the three individual top scorers, and Warwick Medical School was named the best overall medical school based on all the combined scores from the final and previous rounds.
Mew says: "I’m very proud to have represented WMS. The award really reflects the strength of the teaching and the support we receive."
Well done to all our students who took part in the competition, and particularly to Mew who represented WMS so brilliantly!
