Drug Design and synthesis

Design and synthesis of novel therapeutic agents for the prevention of diabetic complications and chemotheraphy of cancer. Modification of therapeutic agents to prolong therapeutic lifetime and enhance bioavailability.

Protein Chemistry

Purification (enzymes, cytoskeletal protiens, receptors, immunoglobulins) and structural characterization.


Radiosynthesis and stable isotope-substituted synthesis. Use of 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, MALDI mass spectrometry, HPLC (preparative and analytical), absorption and fluorescence spectrophotometry.

Cell Biology

Cell Culture

Human and murine cell lines; isolation and culture of human blood cells (erythrocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages & lymphocytes) and rat hepatocytes.

AGEs and AGE REceptors

Studies of AGEs of proteins, nucleotides and phospholipids formed by glycation in vitro and in vivo. Study of AGE receptor epitope recognition, adaptor proteins and functional responses.

Cell dysfunction in hyperglycaemia

Assay of glycolytic intermediates and enzyme activities - particularly glyoxalases, transketolase and PKCβ, assay of α-oxoaldehydes and AGEs, expression of glyoxalases and transketolase.


Study by microscopy, flow cytometry and DNA electrophoresis. Caspase activities and inhibition, BID cleavage and JNK activation. Protein tyrosine kinase and phosphatase activity. Glutathione efflux. Death receptors and adaptor proteins.

Chemoprevention and chemotherapy of cancer

Importance of dietary and pharaceutical isothiocyanates in primary and metastasis prevention. Glyoxalase I as a marker of tumourogenesis and a target for anticancer drug design.
