Children and Young People's Time-Use Questionnaire for Use in Economic Evaluation

The CYP-TUQEE is a generic, standardised resource use questionnaire (RUQ) designed to capture young (0- to 17-year-old) patients’ resource- and time-use data. Two versions of the CYP-TUQEE are available: one for completion directly by children and young people (CYP) aged 11-17, with assistance from parents or carers as needed, and one for proxy completion by parents or carers of CYP aged below 11, or where proxy completion would be appropriate.

Capturing patient cost data is an essential part of most economic evaluations, and it is common for bespoke RUQs to be produced for data collection. Existing standardised instruments for capturing resource use focus on adult populations and they typically do not capture data related to patients’ time usage. The CYP-TUQEE was developed to address this gap.

Researchers are encouraged to implement or adapt the CYP-TUQEE for use in their studies, in line with the Non-Commercial Licence and User Guide (see links below) and after registering their details.

Further Information

The CYP-TUQEE was developed iteratively by a team of researchers, with assistance from a Working Group of experts in the design and development of resource use measures. It was extensively pretested using think aloud interviews and focus group sessions with CYP and parents, as well as members of a group of research active children. It comprises of five primary sections, which can be adpated or excluded:

1. Community care appointments (e.g., with a GP or nurse )
2. Hospital outpatient, day case, and A&E appointments/visits
3. Hospital inpatient stays
4. Activities recommended or prescribed by health care professionals
5. Prescribed or purchased medications
