We have a Flexible Training Award scheme which is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
All MRC DTP in IBR students registered for a PhD are eligible to apply for funds for specialist training, which must meet one of the MRC eligibility criteria as follows:
|1.||High cost training, which could include training in MRC skills priorities, bioinformatics and modelling.|
|2.||Exceptional training opportunities, such as overseas fieldwork, internships/placements and training in new advanced research skills.|
|3.||Opportunities to provide training in partnership working with industry or at the interdisciplinary interface, including internships/placements and collaborative training.|
|4.||Transitions from PhD for outstanding candidates to increase competitiveness in applying to positions within and beyond academia, following thesis submission.|
Here are some examples of student training that has been funded by the Flexible Training Award:
Karen Dhillon l training at a company developing miniature microscopes for circuit neuroscience
It was useful to watch live demos and be able to ask all the technical questions I had. The most useful session was data analysis and training on how to use the software in the way I needed it - I work on a different cell type to what they're used to, so being able to explain my needs in person was wonderful.
Stephen Li l Systems Biology course - From Large Datasets to Biological Insight
The workshop provided an introduction to basic concepts related to bioinformatics analysis. The most relevant module is on supervised machine learning, an approach that I am currently applying to sRNA prediction.
Ben Roberts l Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (ECIS) training
The training allowed me to study how the technique worked, evaluate the equipment and set-up required to utilise this method and finally discuss with experts how I could integrate this into the BBB-Chip I am in the process of building.
