MRC DTP in Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Student Conference
We hold an annual MRC DTP in IBR student conference which was in the Peak district in June 2019.
The events have an academic focus, with students presenting their latest MSc research results and progress with PhD research, along with a number of teambuilding activities. Highlights in 2019 included rock climbing, zip wire, hiking but also a visit to the Poole's cavern and a lively and competitive quiz!
We have already started planning our next conference which will be held in June 2020!
A key feature of our DTP is the monthly skills programme when the whole cohort gets together on a Friday afternoon for student chalk talks, visiting speaker seminars and skills sessions. We heard about a wide range of PhD projects in 2018-19, including:
- Developing a novel model for embryo implantation utilising patient-derived endometrial stem cells
- Investigating Pencillin-binding proteins as targets for novel antimicrobials in the biothreat pathogen Yersinia pestis
- Investigating the nutrient acquisition mechanisms of the important pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Other 2018-19 highlights included inspirational careers talks. We are planning an enhanced programme for 2019-20 with more visiting speaker seminars and some specialist skills sessions.
Warwick and King's College MRC DTP Student Conference
We were delighted to hold our first joint student conference with King's College London MRC DTP in Biomedical Sciences on 19 July 2018.
Students and staff jointly organised this exciting event which featured oral and poster presentations from Warwick and King's College students on their PhD research, along with a number of talks from prestigious guest speakers invited by students on both programmes.
