Glossary

This glossary has been developed for Offer holders and early Phase 1 students of the MB ChB programme. The glossary is not an exhaustive list but contains some of the words necessary for Phase I.

Use this glossary as an aid to your studies and familiarise yourself with the terminology used in medicine.

  • Most of the terms are derived from Greek and Latin which will be highlighted.
  • Some of the terms are prefix, suffix or affix (can be used as both prefix and suffix). Prefixes are highlighted with - (dash). However, suffixes or affixes will not have the dash for them to appear in alphabetic order.
  • Listen to the audio for the pronunciations and click on the image to expand it.

If you have any queries or would like to give feedback, please e-mail Hannah Thein (hannah.thein@warwick.ac.uk).

CBL

Definition

Case Based Learning or CBL is a learner-centred method of teaching and learning that we regard as ‘directed discovery’. It identifies what is essential to know about a patient case while encouraging students, individually and in small groups, to take an active role in identifying what they need to learn and how they can learn it. CBL also acknowledges that students have existing knowledge and experience which they can draw upon, including in contributions to group work.
