Social and Population Perspectives
The Social and Population Perspectives is a longitudinal theme which runs across each year of the course, focusing mainly on paragraphs 23, 24, 25 and 26 of Outcomes for Graduates:
- Applying Psychological Principles (paragraph 23)
- Applying Social Science Principles (paragraph 24)
- Health Promotion and Illness Prevention (paragraph 25)
- Clinical Research and Scholarship (paragraph 26)
We do not require you to do any compulsory reading (see note on recommended reading below), as no prior knowledge will be assumed. However, to get a flavour of the 'social' and 'population' aspects of medical training we suggest you could have a look at the following:
1. Fair Society Healthy Lives' (Marmot Review), published in 2010. Please see the Executive Summary on the website of the Institute of Health Equity 'Fair Society Healthy Lives (The Marmot Review)'. This is a key document describing inequalities in health and concluding that tackling health inequalities require action on six policy objectives.
- Sir Michael Marmot has recently published an update in 'Health Equity in England: the Marmot Review 10 Years on' (February 2020), which shows that inequalities in life expectancy have increased, likely due to austerity measures. Please see the website of The Health Foundation 'Health Equity in England: The Marmot Review 10 Years On'.
- In response to concern about health inequalities in the UK, the medical Royal Colleges and other health care provider organisations have outlined what they consider to be the role of doctors and other health care professionals in the report Working for Health Equity: the Role of Health Professionals. We suggest you have a look at the executive summary available on the website of the Institute of Health Equity 'Working for Health Equity: The Role of Health Professionals'.
2. Health Profiles for Coventry and Warwickshire for 2021, which can be accessed on the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities website 'Local Authority Health Profiles'. In your first year you will be assigned to a community base and to a hospital within Coventry and Warwickshire. We suggest you have a look at the health profiles to give you an overview of the health of the populations in these areas.
