Parents and Carers

Many students have successfully combined studying for MBChB and caring or parenting responsibilities. The MB ChB Student Support team provides information and support related to caring responsibilities, temporary withdrawal for parental/maternity leave, funding, wellbeing and other topics during your studies.

Student voices

WMS Parent Network: You can join a group of current students with caring responsibilities in their WhatsApp group chat to ask questions and share experiences. In order to get added to the group, please contact the WMS Parent Network (email to be added soon).

Take a look at the Personal advice that Adam, a current MBChB student, put together for applicants and offer holders. The page includes guidance based on his personal experience covering information on course commitment, accommodation, nurseries, schools and funding.

Top tip from a student who is a parent

"If you don't live in the area yet, try to find a new home for you and your family as soon as possible. Not only is finding accommodation and moving a big task, but it is also vital to have a local address when you want to sign up for services, such as nursery, school, etc."

Emily, a recent MB ChB graduate, sharing her experience of studying with caring responsibilities:

Breastfeeding

There is a family room in the Medical School Building (A-023) where infants can be breastfed and there is also a fridge where breast milk can be stored. Each NHS Trust has its own arrangements for breastfeeding mothers.
