    1. the decision to seek help is influenced by many factors, particularly personal beliefs about the cause, course and consequences of one’s illness
    2. actual illness, either in terms of illness severity or duration, is a poor predictor of help seeking behaviour
    3. the potential for poor doctor-patient communication is often in place prior to consultation
