Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership (CWPT) is a Community Mental Health Trust covering Coventry and the Warwickshire area. This means that you can be allocated to a placement in Coventry, Leamington Spa, Kenilworth, Warwick, Stratford upon Avon, Rugby or Nuneaton. During your psychiatry placement, you will also spend 1 week in one of the hospital trusts for acute psychiatry.

Advice from other students

Practice Psych History and MSE

Practice taking a full psychiatric history where you can, and know how to do a MSE!

Tip!

The mnemonic ASEPTIC can be used to remember the domains of the MSE:

  • A - Appearance/Behaviour.
  • S - Speech
  • E - Emotion (Mood and Affect)
  • P - Perception (Auditory/Visual Hallucinations)
  • T - Thought Content (Suicidal/Homicidal Ideation) and Process
  • I - Insight and Judgement
  • C - Cognition

DON'T FORGET TO DO A RISK ASSESSMENT!

In-patient week

On in-patient week, try to talk to one of the doctors about the patients before ward round, it is even better if you can take a history do an MSE with a couple of patients. Ward round is a snapshot and I think you will get more out of it if you have some background about the patients and their symptoms/diagnoses when you go in.

Clinics

Clinics, Clinics, Clinics! Sign up to as many as you can as it will definitely give context to content you are studying and may even provide patient experiences that you can 'hang your understanding' on.
