Work Experience - Things to do

Thank you for choosing the Physics Department at the University of Warwick for your work placement. We hope you will find this opportunity beneficial and a good insight into what it is like to work in a scientific research environment. You will be encouraged to use your ideas and skills under the guidance of trained staff in order for you to achieve the most out of this experience. Please see below a list of tasks to perform, and regulations to be aware of, before and during your placement.

BEFORE YOUR PLACEMENT BEGINS

Please complete the following forms and return them to physicshr@warwick.ac.uk by Friday 15th March 2024.

  1. Emergency Contact Form This information will also be used to set you up with an IT account. The information will be held securely while you are on your placement and will be deleted after you leave.
  2. IT form. Please ensure you read the University's regulation on the use of University Computing FacilitiesLink opens in a new window. By signing up for an IT account, you agree to abide by these regulations. If you are under 18, parent/guardian consent is required before you can be granted IT access. Please ensure a parent or guardian has signed this, this should come from a parent/guardian email address.
  3. Consent form for 16 years+ or consent form for under 16 years. We may take photographs during your placement to use in our promotional material such as our website or to advertise our placements in future years. If you are willing to take part, please complete the appropriate consent form. If you'd prefer not, please just let us know.

Once the schedule has been finalised it will be sent to you. Please familiarise yourself with it, paying particular attention to the start and end times each day. Reliability and punctuality are important aspects of working in a research environment.

DURING YOUR PLACEMENT

  1. On the first day of your placement you will receive a departmental health and safety induction. This will support you in keeping safe whilst on your placement and also give you the chance to make sure you know where the emergency exits are in relation to your area of work.
  2. If on any day you are ill or otherwise unable to come into work, it is essential that you or your parent/carer telephone the department to inform us of your absence. Please call the department office on 024 761 51523. We will then pass the message on to the supervisor of the area in which you are working. You can also send an email to physicsadmin@warwick.ac.uk.
  3. If at any time, you are unsure of the task that you are working on, or if any other problems occur, please do not be afraid to ask for help. No-one expects you to know everything, and sometimes it can be difficult to understand instructions the first time you hear them. It is preferred that you ask for help, rather than struggle with a particular problem. Remember to ask questions, as this is all part of the learning process.
