Funded projects

This is a full list of the funded research projects available. Note that in the Experimental Particle Physics and Astronomy areas, the projects listed are examples, and the exact project choice can be discussed after you apply. In all other project areas, specific projects have priority for funded scholarships. Across all areas, studentships are normally only available for UK and in some cases EU students. Self-funded students and students with external scholarships are also welcome to apply: our funding page has full details on funding options.

The EPP group has funded studentships available for 2019 entry on the following projects. A short overview of the project areas can be found below. Please see the group website for further details. Enquires can be made to Dr. Tom Blake (T.Blake.1@warwick.ac.uk).

Reseach area: LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider

The Warwick LHCb group are leading investigations into physics beyond the Standard Model by studying CP violation in, and the properties of, b-hadron decays. The successful candidate will join this activity and lead one or more analyses leading to publications in prestigious high-impact journals. As a part of their studies, they will contribute fully to the LHCb experiment, including participating in data-taking at CERN and in studies to understand the performance of the detector.

Research area: ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider

The Warwick ATLAS group are leading investigations into the production and decay of the Higgs boson at the LHC. The successful candidate will join this activity and will also play a roll in the ongoing running of the detector and preparation for future upgrades (thorough work on the ATLAS trigger system or work on a replacement tracker).

Research area: Future Neutrino Physics Projects

The Warwick group in involved in preparatory studies for a future long-baseline neutrino experiment for the LBNE/LBNF project and Hyper-Kamiokande. The successful applicant will contribute to the development work needed to advance these projects. The applicant may also have the possibility to contribute to the analysis of the data collected by the T2K neutrino experiment in Japan.

Research area: Double Beta Decay

The Warwick SuperNEMO double beta decay group leads the exploitation of the first SuperNEMO data from the demonstrator device at the Modane underground laboratory in France. The successful candidate will join this activity and lead one or more analyses leading to publications in prestigious high-impact journals.

Funding:

PhD studentships (typically 42 months) are available. Typically support is available for UK and EU students, while others are likely to need their own source of funding. Enquiries, including queries on possible sources of funding, from all potential candidates are welcome.
