Second Year Modules

The course consists of a core with further modules taken from options lists. Enough options have to be taken in order to raise the total load to at least 120 CATS credits, which is the normal load. You must choose modules worth at least 15 CATS from those given in List A. The maximum permitted load is 150 CATS.

*You are only permitted to take one foreign language module in any one year.

The marks you obtain in the second year count towards your final degree classification (20% for MMathPhys and 30% for BSc).

Load

Where options are taken, so that the load exceeds the normal load, the marks for all modules attempted will appear on your University transcript. The overall year mark will be calculated as the arithmetic mean of the subset of whole modules, weighted according to their credit weighting, which satisfies the course regulations and results in the highest mark.

Before contemplating an overload you should discuss it with your personal tutor. We will be monitoring your registrations and you may be asked to discuss the situation with the Director of Studies or the Director of Student Experience. Please note that registering for modules and then not attempting the examination may be considered an abuse of the system and could lead to sanctions.

Option Choices

It is a good idea to 'sample' more options than you are required to take before committing yourself. You should also discuss your choice of options with your personal tutor. Current third and fourth year students can also give advice.

It is recommended that students on the MMathPhys course should be familiar with programming. PX277 Computational Physics will help develop your programming skills. Please note that you are not permitted to take MA117 Programming for Scientists after year 1.

Standard options are those listed in the course regulations. You may also take (almost) any other modules available to mathematics or physics students. To take an unusual option you should consult the document on unusual options and discuss your choices your Personal Tutor, in advance. You will need to obtain the necessary permission from the lecturer offering the module and complete an unusual option form. Modules taught by mathematics or physics will count as List A modules, those taught by other departments as List B.

You may NOT take PX275 Mathematical Methods for Physicists.
