Detecting exoplanets and characterising their atmospheres

In this talk I will give a general overview of the methods we use to detect planets around other stars and outline the types of planets we are finding. I will also explain how it is possible to study the atmospheres of exoplanets, even when it is not possible to see the planets directly. Finally, I will describe plans to search for signs of life on exoplanets and discuss factors that are likely to influence the habitability of an exoplanet.
