Software setup

This page contains some guidelines for setting up your computer in order to be able to participate in the course.

There are three pieces of software that are required to be installed:

  • Zoom - videoconferencing client
  • VSCode - a versatile integrated development environment
  • Docker - tool for creating and running isolated environments

In addition you will need to sign-up for an account on the GitHub git repository hosting service. Once signed-up, please follow the instructions for connecting to GitHub using the Secure Shell Protocol (SSH).

Once you have registered for the course, you should also add yourself to the #cplusplus Slack channel for this course, where you will be able to ask questions etc. So you might want to additionally install the Slack client for your OS.

Prior to the course it is necessary only to:

  • Install the various pieces of software, following the instructions for your operating system on the above pages
    • If you already have VSCode installed please make sure it is version 1.60.2 or later
  • Install the VSCode plugins/extensions:
    • C/C++ (version 1.6.0 or later)
    • Remote-Containers (version 0.194.0 or later)
    • Optionally, any others mentioned here
  • Check that VSCode/Docker are running correctly by following the test setup below
