New Staff in Physics

Ligang Xia

I will be working with Dr. Sinead Farrington on searching for beyond-Standard-Model higgs boson and studying muon triggers in ATLAS experiments. I did my PhD in the BESIII collaboration and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the ATLAS collaboration, in Tsinghua University, China. My main research interest is searching for beyond-stardard-model particles or phenomena.

Joly Aarons

I will be working with Dr. Nick Hine on Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) developments for calculating excited state forces in the ONETEP linear scaling DFT package. This will enable us to perform structural relaxations and molecular dynamics within the excited state.

I did my undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of York and my PhD at Southampton University. In Southampton, I worked on applications of ONETEP's metals methods to characterising oxygen adsorption properties on experimentally measured platinum nanoparticles. We also extended the methodology to be feasible for calculations with thousands of atoms. In Warwick, I hope to apply the new techniques we develop as widely as possible to theoretical prediction of fluorescence properties and excited state dynamics.

Angelo Frangeskou

I will be working with Dr. Gavin Morley following on from a PhD in the same group where I worked on levitated nanodiamonds. My main research goal is to build a diamond sensor containing an ensemble of electron spins to detect magnetic signals from the heart for application in magnetocardiography

Klaas Wiersema

Klaas joins the department as a Research Fellow in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

I will be working on follow-up observations of transient sources, for prof. Andrew Levan.

My main research interests are relativistic jet sources, particularly gamma-ray bursts, and electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. I did my PhD at the Anton Pannekoek Institute of the University of Amsterdam; and after that worked as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Leicester.
