Abstract: Most words are arbitrary, showing no resemblances between word forms and their meanings. However, the relationship between a word and its meaning can also be iconic, with some words being more iconic than others, and some languages having more iconic words than others. In this project, we asked whether iconic links between words and their meaning make these words easier to process. We present two studies, one exploratory study on English and one pre-registered study on Spanish, which show partial evidence for an iconicity effect on word processing in a lexical decision task and a word naming task. We will discuss potential cross-linguistic differences and directions for future research.
