The Butterfly Hunter Workshop
This full-day workshop developed by Technocamps at Swansea University discusses the work of Welsh naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in discovering the theory of evolution during the same period as Charles Darwin. As part of the workshop pupils will learn about Wallace’s work and will explore why there are so many different species of living things in the world. They will learn about DNA at a high-level and how it is the instructions or “building-blocks” for life, followed by developing a butterfly catching game in the Scratch programming language. Following lunch, they will explore how Machine Learning could have helped Wallace during his expeditions, learning how it works and training their own computer model to recognise different species of animals. The workshop is aimed at years 5-6 and develops their understanding of history, science and computer science, inspiring them to want to learn more.
Maximum number of attendees is 35. To discuss this workshop, please email dcs-outreach@warwick.ac.uk
