Progression Advice

This page aims to provide guidance and answer common questions for students unable to progress into the next year of their degree. Please note, if you are a student visa holder, then any immigration or visa questions must be directed to immigration and compliance.

1. I have received my results in Tabula and they say that I cannot progress and am required to withdraw. Why?

Each year you must meet the progression requirements. These requirements are set out in the course handbooks. These are university rules aligned to the requirements to gain a degree in the UK and are internationally recognised.

You cannot progress and are required to withdraw since you have not met these requirements and have sat all available reassessment opportunities. This means you will leave the university.

2. I have received my results in Tabula and they say that I cannot progress and am required to resit without residence. Why?

As in point 1 above, each year you must meet the progression requirements. These requirements are set out in the course handbooks.

You cannot progress and are required to resit without residence since you had not met these requirements by the end of the September reassessment period, but due to accepted mitigating circumstances you still have reassessment opportunities. Since you had not met the progression requirements you cannot yet continue your studies onto the next year of your degree. Your next year of study will be suspended and you will be offered your remaining reassessment opportunities during the next academic year at the scheduled exam period for any modules you are retaking.

If you return to the university to take these reassessments and subsequently meet the progression requirements, then you will continue onto the next year of your degree the following academic year.

3. I am required to withdraw and I don't want to leave the university, can I take the year again?

No you cannot take the year again unless there are exceptional circumstances that prevented you from engaging with your studies thoughout the entire academic year. These circumstances must be exceptional.

The university terminology is a restart.

By September, students in such situations should have already applied for a restart if they had been unable to study significant amounts of their course last year.

If you are required to withdraw from the university and there are reasons why it was not possible to submit mitigating circumstances that are relevant to your progression decision, then you can appeal. Within your appeal you will be required to provide both:

  • evidence that explains why it was impossible to submit your mitigating circumstances on time and
  • the mitigating circumstances with appropriate independent evidence.

Please contact Minhaz in the Support Office in the first instance to discuss your situation. Details of the appeals process are given on the Appeals page.

4. I am required to withdraw and I don't want to leave the university, can I transfer to another course?

  • You will need to identify a suitable course and then approach that department directly. Unfortunately, the Statistics Department cannot apply on your behalf.
  • Although you may not want to leave the university, you may find that other UK institutions are willing to accept you onto one of their courses. You will need to contact them directly. Some institutions have a process called "accreditation of prior learning", which means, depending on what stage you are at and your mark profile for previous years they may permit direct entry into a later year of their degree programme. The decision on whether they accept you and for which year of entry is entirely theirs.

5. I don't know what to do. What can I do now?

First of all, please read the message written in Tabula.

You can contact Minhaz in the Support Office or Wellbeing and Student Support. But, please note, they can only provide support and advice, the only options are set out above.
