My role

I hold the Chair in Nanocomposites in WMG and I’m heading up a new research team within the field of Nanocomposites. We are establishing a capability where materials having at least one dimension on the
nanoscale (<100nm), such as carbon nanotubes, graphene and quantum dots, are incorporated into polymers and metal alloys and subsequently processed to produce multifunctional components that have application in a broad range of industries, such as telecommunications, electronics, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive, security and medicine.

I work with many academic colleagues both within WMG, the wider University of Warwick community, with a number of leading international research groups and most fortuitously with a team of talented researchers.

My early career

After a degree, PhD and a postdoctoral research fellowship, I worked in R&D in the medical device and automotive industries, latterly at board level. I returned to academia in 2002 and prior to coming to WMG I was Director of the Polymer Processing Research Centre (PPRC), Director of the Medical Polymer Research Institute (MPRI) and Director of the Advanced Materials & Processing Research Cluster at Queen’s University Belfast.

Best part of my job

The best part of my job is the freedom to carry out research on topics that interest me in a vibrant and dynamic environment for collaboration with very talented academic colleagues and young researchers.

Best thing about WMG

The people who without exception have a steely determination to be the very best at what they do, but always in a friendly and helpful manner.

Life at Warwick

The campus, although being very close to major population areas, is set in a rural location yet it contains many excellent facilities, including Warwick Arts Centre.
