MARK Pickering knows all about life on both the shop floor and in the boardroom. During almost 30 years in industry, he held every post from apprentice to chief exec. Armed with this huge range of experience he is driving a number of partnerships with industry as WMG’s Director of Development.
His broad remit is to work with clients to identify business needs and to see how WMG can help to meet those needs through its many industrial programmes.
Mark says: “The way that WMG generates success is by working with people to help define their problems and then to help solve those problems. We take the role of the prime educational partner but sometimes we will bring other partners, like other universities, companies or institutions into the mix.
“I have worked in a lot of different sectors and have international experience, and having worked my way up from apprentice level to that of CEO I am able to understand people at all levels in the organisation.”
Mark first came into contact with WMG in the mid-1990s when he was managing director of shower manufacturer Mira. The company’s Cheltenham plant had won the UK Best Factory Award following a huge integrated change programme focusing on customer need.
WMG asked him to help launch a Masters module on Business Organisation and Design using the success at Mira as a case study. From there he became involved in teaching on Masters and Post Experience Courses, keeping up the link when he moved to Caradon Plumbing Solutions as a main board director and later to McKechnie Automotive where he was Chief Executive Officer in the UK and Detroit. When parts of that company were sold off he was keen to have a change of direction and came to Warwick full-time.
His career in industry began in 1976 as a student apprentice with Austin Morris in Longbridge while studying production technology and management at Aston University. He then moved to machine tool company Cincinnati Milacron before holding a number of senior posts at GEC Switchgear and GEC Meters, joining Mira in 1991.
He is a vice-president of the Engineering Employers’ Federation, sits on the Education and Skills Strategy Group, and is a governor at Evesham High School.
