Ed Griffin - Graduate Development Programme - Success story.

Since completing the graduate scheme, what are you doing now?

Following the graduate scheme I am now working as a Project Engineer in the electric machines group at WMG.

How did the graduate scheme prepare you for your career as a Project Engineer?

Various skills I developed during the Graduate Scheme have become invaluable in my role as a Project Engineer. The growth mind-set instilled in us as graduates allows us to continue to develop technically whilst taking on more responsibility in our new roles. In particular my simulation and modelling skills have greatly increased during the Graduate Scheme, a skill that will become useful in the future.

Scheme Highlights

Throughout the scheme, the opportunities to develop professionally and technically have been exceptional. On every one of my six placements, I have been able to make gains on a particular technical field or professional skill through the help of supportive colleagues. A special mention must go to the assistance given in my placements in the Power Electronics and Electric Machines group, it was so good that I chose to stay on as a Project Engineer! I was also involved in a hugely successful graduate group project where we designed, built and tested a miniature autonomous vehicle fleet to be used both as a test bed and a demonstration piece. The opportunity for development in all stages of a fast paced project was great, ranging from project management through the project delivery and the testing of the device.

My part time study of the Automotive Technology postgraduate certificate has complemented my development during my day-to-day work. The studying of MSc-level modules broadened my skillset in many areas such as programming and specifics of automotive electrification.

Any advice to prospective applicants

For prospective applicants, I would recommend that you show a willingness to learn quickly and engage in many technical projects. Everyone’s journey through the graduate scheme is unique, often involving a range of different technical fields, so an enthusiasm for technical engagement will help to drive forward the projects you are involved in.
