Advanced Quality Techniques

Module aims

  • Modern equipment is becoming increasingly complex, often involving thousands of components that must work reliably to ensure that the entire system does not fail.
  • Use of advanced quality techniques ensure that defects are kept to a minimum.
  • In this unit, participants will examine the use of quality methods such as ‘Six Sigma’ and ‘Lean Production’ as well as decision making techniques such as ‘Quality Function Deployment’ in an industrial context.
  • Participants will explore these complex systems and evaluate which system is appropriate in a variety of industrial settings. This will involve process analysis as well analysing customer requirements and selecting appropriate metrics or key performance output variables.

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Evaluate the theories of quality management with particular emphasis on an introduction to contemporary quality management techniques.
  • Apply quality techniques to analyse customer requirements.
  • Select appropriate techniques to analyse and reduce variability in complex systems.
  • Argue the benefits of different quality techniques in a discursive format.
