Numerical Methods for Modelling

Module aims:

  • This module builds on the fundamental mathematics introduced in first year mathematics and provides a basis for advanced modules in the 3rd and 4th year of the Applied Engineering Programme.
  • This module emphasises fundamental numerical concepts needed to formulate and analyse practical problems in engineering contexts.
  • In addition to taught material, participants will be given assignments and directed reading to extend their knowledge and to enhance their appreciation of the relevance of the material covered.
  • Mathematical software will be used to enhance understanding and as an aid to the application of numerical techniques in engineering problems.
  • Students will be given an introduction to the basic concepts of numerical methods within engineering disciplines which will be the baseline for CAE and engineering simulation.
  • The advantages, limitations and pitfalls of mathematical modelling will be highlighted to give an overview of the main engineering and industrial applications.

By the end of this module students should be able to:

  • Recognise the use of numerical methods and their role in formulating and checking the validity of equations to represent a variety of problems in engineering.
  • Choose and apply a variety of numerical methods appropriately to solve differential and simultaneous equations.
  • Employ numerical methods to solve equations and differentiate and integrate data and equations.
  • Model simple problems involving dynamic simulation techniques making appropriate simplifying assumptions.
  • Apply mathematical software such as MATLAB to the solution of engineering problems.
  • Analyse models mathematically using appropriate numerical and statistical techniques and evaluate limitations of measurement on data used in models.
  • Perform appropriate mathematical calculations and communicate results effectively in the written form.
  • Apply numerical methods and Matlab to appropriate engineering contexts.
