Industrial Processes

Module aims

  • In this module participants will examine how advanced manufacturing organisations make extensive use of computers and information technologies and high precision specialist manufacturing technology to produce a heterogeneous mix of products in small or large volumes with both the efficiency of mass production and the flexibility of custom manufacturing in order to respond quickly to customer demands.
  • Participants will be able to study manufacturing processes that are relevant to their sector.
  • These processes are often the more specialist secondary and tertiary manufacturing processes rather than the primary processes studied in years 1 and 2. The module will be delivered by a combination of university staff and industrial specialists.

Examples of specialist processes would be:

  • Body in white processes
  • Paint bake hardening of body panel
  • Self-piercing riveting
  • Remote laser welding
  • Roller Hemming
  • Rail rolling
  • Single crystal turbine blade manufacture

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Understand, Discuss and critically examine the latest advances in manufacturing process technology relevant to their own industry.
  • Critically examine a process (and associated product) that is used in their own workplace or by suppliers as well as the processes introduced in the module or found from other sources.
  • Use a systematic approach to report on the feasibility of the adoption of new processes to achieve, where appropriate, a combination of weight saving, accelerated time to market, quality improvements and cost reduction.
  • Comment on how any new processes might be successfully integrated into the operation.
  • Comment on the environmental impact of any change.
