Engineers are required to make appropriate selection of materials and manufacturing processes taking due account of performance, cost and sustainability.
The Module is split into 5 units of study, the first four of which each has a Material type as its theme.
Each unit will require students to explore the interaction of material, manufacturing process and design on the performance of engineered products as well as the wider implications of their use on the environment.
The fifth unit concentrates on materials selection
By the end of this module students will be able to:
Distinguish between the main classes of engineering material and be able to use the underlying materials science to explain why they behave the way they do in terms of the structure property relationship.
Describe how their properties and structure can be manipulated in order to enhance their performance.
Demonstrate an understanding of the complex interaction between material, manufacturing process and design.
Select appropriate engineering materials for a given engineering requirement.
Evaluate the life cycle environmental impacts of material and process choice.
