Electrical and Electronic Application
Module Aims
- This module aims to provide the students with a deeper understanding of electrical and electronic applications.
- It will focus on usage of diodes and transistors in analogue circuits for basic rectifiers and stabilised power supplies.
- It will then introduce the basics of electric machines and power electronic converters in low-power drives, widely used for motion control, automated manufacturing and in modern appliances.
- Digital processing of the sampled analogue variables, together with the flexibility given by the processing software, is also covered.
- Examples and case studies demonstrate the usage of analytical techniques for predicting the performance of power-converting and signal-conditioning circuits and systems.
By the end of the module the student should be able to:
-
Discuss and compare the electrical characteristics of diodes and transistors used in rectifiers, power supplies and controlled power supplies.
-
Analyse the operation of power supply circuits (linear and switch-mode) and select components for a given performance.
-
Describe the principles of operation of a range of electrical machines and predict their performance in relation to the mechanical-side requirements.
-
Use combinational logic to implement digital circuitry.
-
Analyse both analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversion and apply suitable post-processing of sampled signals.
