Design Management

Post-Experience Module Outline

Design Management (DM)

Introduction

Over recent years, successful manufacturing & engineering companies have tended to replace their strongly functional structures with more flexible organisations capable of having process or product focus. In either style of organisation, it is essential that personnel throughout the company understand where they fit into the design process, the role they play and how they should interact with other functions.

The Design Management module satisfies these requirements by following a generic design process through from initial identification of a need, to the evaluation of in-service performance. The key issues that management must consider are dealt with in relation to their contribution to a competitive design that meets quality, cost and timing constraints.

Objectives: On completion, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand the design process and the need for it to be managed.

  2. Understand the role of all functions in generating a competitive design.

  3. Recognise characteristics for successful design management.
