Logistics Planning (LP)

 

Introduction

This module provides an understanding of the fundamental concepts underlying logistics planning, and the techniques and methodologies which support that function, structured exercises and case studies provide application experience which is reinforced by a company based post-module assignment. Module participants are assumed to be familiar with the basics of MRP, MRP II and JIT.

 

Objectives: On completion, the participant will be able to: 

  1. Understand the master scheduling function and the fundamental decisions required

  2. Understand the impact and implications of capacity constraints

  3. Understand the process, techniques and implications of loading

  4. Understand feedback systems and shop floor control techniques

  5. Understand the issues underlying the collection and interpretation of data for performance measures

  6. Understand the critical importance of linkages to the internal and external customer

 

Contents: 

  1. Master scheduling - fundamental decisions

  2. The impact of capacity constraints

  3. Loading to plants and work centres - forward and backward planning, and infinite versus finite loading

  4. Strategic and tactical off-loading, including subcontracting

  5. Feedback systems and shop floor control

  6. Expediting, work-to-lists and queue management

  7. Back flushing and forward flushing

  8. Performance measures - data collection and interpretation

  9. Measuring the effectiveness of planning

  10. Linkages to the customer
