Operations Management & Lean Supply Chain

INTRODUCTION:

This module introduces a variety of concepts and models addressing the areas of supply and demand, quality, lean, and supply chain management to provide a coherent framework for both production management and supply chain management. It allows participants to structure and clarify their previous understanding by applying these concepts in order to define operations’ problems, critically evaluate the data collected and various options proposed to improve operations management performance.  The module introduces and critically discusses specific approaches, tools and techniques for the planning of schedules and the management of resources and inventory, the concepts of quality and continuous improvement, the adoption of lean principles and integrating the supply chain for improved operational performance. It looks at different control systems options and addresses operations management in the context of the internal business and the external supply chain.  The module also investigates the requirements for the successful implementation of the principles and provides the scope for participants to explore how they might appropriately apply them in their own organisations.

The module is followed by an assessed assignment whereby the participants are required to demonstrate the achievement of specific learning outcomes.  This requires the participants to apply the knowledge and techniques acquired during the module to a specific problem or issue in the workplace.

The module will contribute directly to equipping the participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead within a process based company.

OBJECTIVES: On completion of this module participants are able to:

  1. Understand and critically discuss the principles of Operations and Supply Chain Management and gain insights into their relevance and benefits for their company's business strategy, activities and operations management performance.
  2. Demonstrate effective local application of the above principles, in an area that aligns with their personal targets, in order to provide real business benefit.
  3. Apply appropriately an approach to designing an appropriate balance of resource utilisation capable of supplying customer demand in the most appropriate manner, within a lean supply chain.
  4. Identify, select and apply appropriately relevant tools and techniques to support continuous improvement.
  5. Critically evaluate how understanding and providing value as perceived by the customer might apply in different sectors, processes and levels within the enterprise.
  6. Network and enhance understanding of internal & external better practice by creating a shared record of their knowledge and experience of these issues.
  7. Identify one additional learning intervention in an area covered by the course that will enable them to increase their personal contribution towards business success.
  8. In addition, the module is designed to further develop the participants’ key transferable skills and generic-academic capabilities in the following areas:
  • Verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to learn;
  • Written communication skills;
  • Ability for critical evaluation and analysis.
