The module builds on the fluid dynamics concepts introduced in Thermo fluids in the first and second year of the course and provides a strong foundation for aerodynamic applications.
The first part of the module covers the participants’ understanding of forces on the performance of aircraft and the fundamentals of gas dynamics in aerodynamic applications.
This module will also aim to cover the understanding of low speed aerodynamics in the application of locomotive and light vehicle design and the fundamental concepts of the compressible flows thereafter.
Wing theory and its design based on performance criteria are also discussed. A model to estimate aerodynamic performance through experiment, computational and numerical approaches for automotive, aircraft and locomotive applications will be developed in the later part of this module to understand the effect of transition and turbulence characteristics.
