This module builds on the fundamental mathematics introduced in first year mathematics and provides a basis for advanced modules in the 3rd and 4th year of the Applied Engineering Programme.
This module emphasises the fundamental numerical concepts needed to formulate and analyse practical problems in engineering contexts.
In addition to taught material, participants will be given assignments and directed reading to extend their knowledge and to enhance their appreciation of the relevance of the material covered.
Mathematical software will be used to enhance understanding and as an aid to the application of numerical techniques in engineering problems. Participants will be given an introduction to the basic concepts of numerical methods within engineering disciplines, which will be the baseline for CAE and engineering simulation. The advantages, limitations and pitfalls of mathematical modelling will be highlighted to give an overview of the main engineering and industrial applications.
