All engineering products are designed and manufactured via a range of technologies. The challenge is to create a product that has high quality and low cost and is responsive to the customer.
A primary skill required by the engineer to meet this challenge is to understand the impact of manufacturing constraints on product design and process planning.
This module covers an understanding of the various processes involved in analysing product design, preparing for its manufacture and assembly in an economical method. A value engineering approach to evaluate the design, manufacturing and assembly processes will be used in the first part of the module.
The second part will be an analytical review of manufacturing methods and the various factors affecting the design process, quality standards and timescales.
The unit will also explore the economic methods of assembly and geometric tolerances to the manufacture of a product.
Overall, you will develop an understanding of how to design a product that is easily and economically manufactured in a range of different industrial settings.
