Course overview



Our Applied Engineering Programme (AEP) allows you to gain a BEng degree while working full-time.

This course will develop you as a multi-disciplinary engineer, giving you a wide scope of career paths to follow. You will learn the fundamentals of engineering and technology including mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, materials and design. You will also develop knowledge and skills in business operations, innovation and cross-organisation efficiency.

The applied nature of this course means you will complete work-based assignments and projects throughout, meaning you will gain a real understanding of the principles taught and benefits to businesses.

This course also allows you to select options in the final two years so you can choose a specialist pathway that suits your career objectives and the needs of your company. Our streams are Applied Engineering, Business, Manufacturing, and Product Creation.

Course content

For the first two years, you'll study six core engineering modules per year. These will take place in a series of 'blocks', which will require your attendance at the University of Warwick campus from Monday to Friday, approximately 6 times a year. Part of each module will be studied during each block. You will take both examinations and undertake work-based assignments as part of your assessment.

Across years three and four, you will select ten taught modules that are more specialised and individual to your learning needs. The emphasis here is on work-based assignments and projects, rather than formal written exams. Each module will run over five full days (Monday-Friday), at WMG. There is a 30 credit work-based project in year 4.

In addition to the normal lectures, practical lab sessions, seminars and tutorials, you will have access to an online "Virtual Learning Environment" for further support between modules.

Entry requirements

This degree programme offers a flexible and non-traditional path into university education, and welcomes participants from a range of ages and company backgrounds. We have students on the course who have recently completed Apprenticeship schemes, some who are on Higher Apprenticeship pathways, and more experienced staff looking to further their career potential.

Please refer to individual companies you apply to, or your own company for their entry criteria.

To enrol on the programme, you must have the support of your employer, and have a good standard in Maths and Physics (equivalent to grade A or B at A-level), which we will assess through an entry test. Generally speaking, the entrance test standard is A-Level Maths (equivalent to A or B). We can provide online practice questions and revision information to help you with this - please contact us if you would like to access these.

• Apply relevant and advanced analytical, practical and laboratory skills to complex engineering problems

• Develop the ability to plan and manage the design and engineering process, and evaluate outcomes working with business and/or technical uncertainty.

• Understand the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in business management in the engineering sector

• Appreciate health & safety, environmental and commercial risk as well as legal and contractual issues relevant to business management and process operation.

"I completed my apprenticeship in August 2019 and now work as a Lead Engineer within Exterior Systems at Jaguar Land Rover. I am responsible for the delivery of a system (within exterior systems) from concept through to production. My job role is massively varied as I am involved in every stage of the development process; from working with the designers in the design studio through to working with the operators on the assembly line - so no 2 days are the same! I enjoy what I do and the experience I gained during my apprenticeship has proved invaluable so far and will continue to assist me in my future career."
