introparagraph

The Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centres (DER-IC) is a UK-wide project to accelerate delivery of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) solutions for the global market.

DER-IC forms a network of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) expertise with four regional centres across the UK. We connect industry with researchers to develop and scale up PEMD technologies and manufacturing processes.
The centres were set up by UK Research and Innovation in 2020 as part of the Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge. The centres have access to over £300m of PEMD equipment for developing, testing and manufacturing products. In addition, the centres are investing £28M in new state-of-the-art open access equipment to help grow the UK supply chain and fill gaps in the UK’s current capability. The centres will make the UK globally recognised as the centre of excellence in the PEMD manufacturing process.

WMG at the University of Warwick is one of the Government’s High Value Manufacturing centres. We have internationally recognised facilities and expertise in transport electrification, connected and automated mobility, sustainable manufacturing, multi-materials, supply chains and digital manufacturing.

Our Energy Innovation Centre is a leading facility for battery R&D covering the entire battery life-cycle from raw materials through to recycling, working multi-sector at an industrial scale. WMG are the Advanced Propulsion Centre spoke for Electrical Energy Storage and one of the founding partners of Faraday Institution and UK Battery Industrialisation Centre.

We have significant capability in power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) technology and are leading the Midlands region ‘Driving the Electric Revolution’ (DER) Industrialisation Centre. We will be opening a Winding Centre of Excellence facility next year which will provide the opportunity for OEMs and their supply chain partners to develop PEMD manufacturing capacity in the UK.

Equipment – Winding Centre of Excellence facility to manufacture all types of windings at production quality; specialising in hairpin stators

  • Discrete hairpin winding and continuous hairpin winding
  • Concentrated windings for radial and axial flux machines
  • Insertion robot for magnetised magnets for rotor assembly
  • Magnetiser, rotor assembly to hub, trickle impregnation, stator loading into housing and curing ovens
  • In-process testing of electrical, thermal and mechanical effects

What gaps in supply chain are we addressing?

  • Provides the capability for UK based OEMs and SMEs to develop eMachine solutions using discrete hairpin windings, the most common application for automotive and related sectors, continuous hairpin and concentrated windings
  • Provides off-line facility to develop manufacturing processes, materials for high volume applications
