Board of Examiners

NOTE - these regulations apply to Candidates who registered for their course during the 2013/14 academic year (i.e. 1 August 2013 - 31 July 2014). For those who registered before that date, see Exam Board (Pre-2013 entry). For those who registered from 1 August 2014 onwards, see Exam Board

The award of degrees is made by the University Senate upon recommendations made by Boards of Examiners, which consists of members of staff of WMG and an External Examiner - a senior academic from another institution. For the full time MSc programme the Boards of Examiners meet in late November (with re-sits being considered in May the following year). These Boards will consider the course work and project performance of all the candidates, together with any other information which is relevant to their decision making process. They will then make recommendations to the University Senate regarding the following awards:

MSc 
  • Complete at least 9 modules, which should include the specified core modules for the relevant degree. Pass at least 6 modules (including all essential core modules) with a mark of at least 50%; a further 3 failed modules may be accepted for the MSc, providing they achieved a mark of at least 40%

AND

  • Pass the project with a pass mark of at least 50% (oral and dissertation elements must both be passed)
MSc with Distinction
  • Pass all modules and project with a mark of at least 50% and with an overall (weighted) average of 70%.

MSc with Merit

  • Pass all modules and project with a mark of at least 50% and with an overall (weighted) average of 65%.
Postgraduate Diploma 
  • Complete and pass at least 6 modules (relevant to the degree) PLUS a 60 credit Diploma project OR
  • Complete and pass at least 12 modules relevant to the degree
Postgraduate Certificate 
  • Complete and pass at least 6 modules relevant to the degree
Postgraduate Award 
  • Complete and pass at least 3 modules relevant to the degree
Fail 
  • None of the above
