Extending your Registration Period

Your course of study should normally be completed within your registration period (1 year for full-time students, 3 years for part-time students, less time if you are registered for a sub-qualification or have carried credit forward into your MSc registration).

If you believe you have a valid reason (see Extending your Project Submission Date for examples of valid reasons) for having a longer period then a short extension may be possible; periods of extension are only allowed where you can demonstrate that - through no fault of your own - you have "lost" time which normally would have been devoted to your studies.

In this case you should:

  1. Gain individual written support from your doctor/the Student Counsellor if you are citing a medical/personal reason. These should be addressed to the Programme Director.
  2. If the reason for the request is to complete your project then written support is also required from your project supervisor(s). This should indicate the amount of work that you have completed on your project to date and his/her views on the feasibility of your completion within the timescale you have proposed.
  3. Contact your Programme Director requesting an extension and the specific period you wish to cover. Clearly state the reasons for your request. You should also include a plan for completion of the programme requirements and enclose your letters of support.
  4. On receipt of your request and the necessary supporting documentation the Programme Director will review the request against the programme regulations.
  5. The Programme Director will then recommend to the university authorities whether the request should be accepted or not. You must not assume that your request has been granted – when the appropriate arrangements have been made you will be notified in writing.

NOTE:

  • All supporting documentation should be in English or translated into English if necessary.
  • Requests to extend your period of registration should be submitted in GOOD TIME; requests that are received less than 2 weeks prior to the current end of registration period will be seen as demonstration poor time management - which is not grounds for an extension. Retrospective requests (i.e. those submitted AFTER your end of registration period) are generally NOT considered. Further, if you are registered for the MSc and have not had a project allocated/approved in good time (i.e. at least 6 months prior to the end of your registration period), it is unlikely that your request will be granted.

An administrative fee may be levied by the University on extensions. You will be notified of the details of this when your request has been processed.
