Product Excellence using Six Sigma

Introduction

This module will enable participants to understand how organizations develop, manage and plan design processes to support policy and strategy and fully satisfy, and generate increasing value for customers and other stakeholders. It uses the design for six sigma methodology as an approach to design for excellence. In particular it focuses on the management and reduction of risk as well as capturing customer requirements. It also considers all the factors affecting excellence in design.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion participants will be able to:

  • Critique the use of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS)
  • Discover how the DFSS methodology can enhance product excellence
  • Develop a conceptual understanding of how to capture customer requirements to design for excellence
  • Discover how the application of life time data analysis aids decision making and consequently enhances product excellence
  • Evaluate how analytical tools are applied in DFSS

  • Introduction to DFSS
  • Comparison of DFSS and SS (via in-module work)
  • Application of Design for reliability tools - FMEA, FTA, RBD
  • Application of Safety tools HAZOP
  • Reliability Testing approaches – ALT, HALT, ESS, HASS
  • Life date analysis methods – Exponential and Weibull distribution fitting
  • Reliability prediction
  • Application of QFD
  • Risk management

Assessment

4000 words PMA (70% weighting) plus in module exercise assessment and reflective writing (30% weighting)

Duration

Two weeks, including 17.5 hours of lectures and 16.5hours of practical class/workshops
